Five questions to answer before you buy

  1. Where will you ride most? Indoors and stores favor compact 3-wheel or travel scooters; outdoors favors 4-wheel or all-terrain.
  2. How will you transport it? If you'll lift it into a car, choose a folding model and check the heaviest piece weight.
  3. Will you fly? Choose a scooter with a removable lithium battery that meets airline limits (commonly up to 300 Wh) and carry its battery documentation.
  4. What is your weight? Pick a capacity at least 50 lb above your weight for battery life and durability.
  5. How far do you go? Real-world range is usually 60–70% of the advertised figure on hills or in cold weather.

Mobility Scooters: frequently asked questions

How much does a good mobility scooter cost?

At Selected Comfort, mobility scooters range from about $995 to $7,495. Most folding travel scooters cost $1,400 to $3,900, standard 3- and 4-wheel scooters $2,600 to $3,600, and heavy-duty or enclosed cabin scooters $3,400 to $7,500. Every scooter ships free and financing is available.

Is a 3-wheel or 4-wheel mobility scooter better?

A 3-wheel scooter turns in a tighter circle and has more legroom, so it suits indoor and store use. A 4-wheel scooter is more stable on slopes, curbs and uneven ground, so it is the safer choice for outdoor riding and for less confident riders.

Can I take a mobility scooter on a plane?

Yes, many folding scooters fly. Airlines generally accept removable lithium batteries up to 300 Wh (or two spares up to 160 Wh each) in the cabin. Call your airline at least 48 hours before the flight and carry the battery specification sheet. The FreeRider Luggie and SmartScoot ranges are popular travel choices.

Does Medicare cover mobility scooters?

Medicare Part B may cover a power-operated scooter when a doctor documents that you need it to move around inside your home. Coverage has strict rules and requires a Medicare-enrolled supplier. Travel and outdoor scooters are often bought direct, as Medicare does not cover them for use outside the home.

What is the lightest folding mobility scooter?

Travel scooters such as the FreeRider Luggie and SmartScoot fold in seconds and weigh roughly 40–60 lb with the battery, with the heaviest piece light enough for many people to lift into a car trunk. See our folding travel scooter guide for weights and trunk sizes.
