How to choose an off-road mobility scooter

Many scooters are sold as "all-terrain" because they have bigger wheels. A true off-road scooter needs four things: suspension on every wheel, large pneumatic tires, ground clearance to get over roots and ruts, and a battery with range to spare, because rough ground drains power faster than pavement.

Five checks before you buy

  • Terrain: packed gravel and park paths need good tires. Grass, mud, roots and hills need real suspension and more power.
  • Range: plan on getting less than the rated range on rough or hilly ground, and choose a battery with a margin.
  • Rider weight: check the weight capacity, and allow for bags or gear you carry.
  • Storage and transport: off-road scooters are heavy and most do not fold. Plan for a garage or shed, and a trailer or vehicle lift for trips.
  • Sand: no scooter handles soft beach sand well. For the beach, choose a beach wheelchair with balloon tires.

All-Terrain & Off-Road Mobility Scooters: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an all-terrain and an off-road mobility scooter?

The terms are often used the same way. In practice, scooters with larger tires handle gravel and grass, while true off-road scooters add suspension on every wheel, higher ground clearance and stronger motors for trails, roots and hills.

How far can an off-road mobility scooter go on one charge?

The models here are rated from about 25 miles (Green Transporter Cheeta Ninja) to up to 45 miles (GIO Tron PRO). Expect less range on hills, soft ground and in cold weather.

Can an off-road mobility scooter go on the beach?

Not well. Soft sand makes even all-terrain scooter tires sink. For beach trips, a beach wheelchair with wide balloon tires is the better choice.

Are 4-wheel scooters better for rough ground?

Yes. Four wheels give a wider, more stable base on uneven ground and slopes than three wheels. The FreeRider Terrain FR1, FR GDX and GIO Tron PRO are all 4-wheel designs.

Do off-road mobility scooters fold for travel?

Usually not. Suspension, large tires and big batteries make them heavy. If you need a scooter that fits in a car trunk or goes on a plane, see our folding travel scooters.
