Folding & Travel Mobility Scooters

Folding mobility scooters fold or come apart so one person can lift them into a car trunk, store them in a closet or take them on a trip. Selected Comfort carries folding travel scooters from SmartScoot, HandyScoot, SNAPnGO, Luggie and Journey, from $1,399, with the heaviest piece starting at 27 lb.

Compare two numbers first: the weight of the heaviest piece you will lift, and the battery size if you plan to fly. Need a joystick and a wheelchair-style seat instead? See folding power chairs, or browse all mobility scooters for sale.

How to choose a folding mobility scooter

Choose a folding mobility scooter by the heaviest piece you will lift, then by battery size if you fly, then by range and rider weight. A scooter that is too heavy to lift alone ends up staying at home, so start with the lift.

1. The heaviest piece, not the total weight

Many travel scooters come apart, or drop the battery and seat, before you lift them. The SmartScoot lists a heaviest part of 27 lb, the HandyScoot 29 lb and the SNAPnGO 31 lb. One-piece folding scooters weigh more: the Journey So Lite is 40 lb, and the Luggie Elite is 51.7 lb without its battery, so it is easier to wheel like luggage than to lift. Try lifting a bag of similar weight into your trunk before you decide.

2. Flying with a folding scooter

Watt-hours (Wh) measure how much energy a battery stores, and airlines use this number to decide whether it can fly. Under FAA rules, a lithium-ion battery in a mobility aid must not exceed 300 Wh, and you may carry one spare up to 300 Wh or two spares up to 160 Wh each, in the cabin only. No scooter is "FAA approved": the battery and the airline's own policy decide.

  • SmartScoot's maker lists a 288 Wh battery, and the SNAPnGO's 36V 6.4Ah battery works out to about 230 Wh.
  • FreeRider lists Luggie batteries in amp-hours (10.5Ah lithium-ion on most models), not watt-hours, so ask us for the battery label before you book.
  • Call the airline at least 48 hours before you fly, carry the battery label, and arrive early: airlines may ask you to check in up to one hour before general check-in.

Read our air travel FAQ for scooters and power chairs for the full process.

3. Range, battery type and rider weight

Listed ranges run from about 8 miles (Journey So Lite) to 15 miles (HandyScoot and Luggie Elite) on flat ground; hills, cold and heavier riders cut that. Most models use lithium-ion batteries, but the Luggie Classic II uses a heavier 15Ah sealed lead-acid battery. Rider limits run from 250 lb (SmartScoot) to 360 lb (Luggie Super Plus 4), so leave headroom for bags.

4. Who a folding scooter is not for

Folding scooters have small wheels and low ground clearance (2.5 in on the Luggie Elite), so they suit smooth pavements, malls, cruise ships and airports. For gravel, grass or steep slopes, look at our all-terrain mobility scooters instead.

Folding & Travel Mobility Scooters: frequently asked questions

What is the lightest folding mobility scooter?

Among the folding scooters Selected Comfort sells, the SmartScoot has the lightest heaviest piece at 27 lb, followed by the HandyScoot at 29 lb and the SNAPnGO at 31 lb. Compare the heaviest piece rather than the total weight, because that is what you actually lift.

Can I take a folding mobility scooter on a plane?

Usually yes, if the battery meets the rules. FAA rules limit a lithium-ion mobility aid battery to 300 Wh, with one spare up to 300 Wh or two spares up to 160 Wh each carried in the cabin. No scooter is FAA approved: the battery and the airline's policy decide, so call the airline at least 48 hours ahead with the battery details.

Will a folding mobility scooter fit in my car trunk?

Most fit in a mid-size sedan or SUV trunk once folded or taken apart, but compare the folded size on the product page with your trunk opening as well as the floor. The Luggie Elite, for example, folds to 18 in long, and break-apart models such as the SmartScoot go in piece by piece.

How far can a folding mobility scooter go on one charge?

Folding scooters at Selected Comfort list ranges from about 8 miles (Journey So Lite) to 15 miles (HandyScoot and Luggie Elite) on flat ground. Hills, cold weather and heavier riders reduce range. A spare battery extends it, within airline limits if you fly.

What is the weight limit on a folding mobility scooter?

Rider limits on the folding scooters we sell run from 250 lb (SmartScoot) to 360 lb (Luggie Super Plus 4). Choose a model with headroom above the rider's weight plus any bags, and look at heavier-duty scooters for riders above that.

How much does a folding mobility scooter cost?

Folding scooters at Selected Comfort start at $1,399 for the SNAPnGO Sport and reach $4,070 for the Luggie Super Plus 4 in its top configuration. Lightweight break-apart and one-piece models cost $1,399 to $2,599, and the larger Luggie models $3,269 to $4,070. Prices as of October 2026, with free shipping in the USA.
