How to choose a bariatric patient lift

Most standard home patient lifts are rated around 400 to 450 lb. A bariatric lift raises that limit, and the lifts here start at 600 lb. Choose a rating comfortably above the user's current weight, so the lift is never working at its limit.

What to check before you buy

  • Full-body or sit-to-stand: if the user can bear some weight and has trunk control, a 600 lb sit-to-stand lift is quicker for daily transfers. Otherwise choose a full-body lift.
  • Base width and doorways: bariatric bases open wide for stability. The Hoyer Bariatric Powered Resident Lift needs about 42 inches with its legs open, so measure doorways and the space around the bed.
  • Under-bed clearance: the base legs must slide under the bed. The Lumex LF1090 sits 4.7 inches off the floor and the Hoyer Bariatric Powered Resident Lift about 4.5 inches.
  • Powered base: on many 700 lb and heavier lifts, the legs open and close from the hand control, so the caregiver never has to force a loaded base.
  • Scale: a built-in scale lets you weigh the user during a transfer. It is standard on the Hoyer Calibre and optional on several MaxiCare and Hoyer models.
  • Slings: use a sling rated at or above the user's weight, and check it fits your lift's spreader bar.

Bariatric Patient Lifts: frequently asked questions

What weight counts as bariatric for a patient lift?

Standard home patient lifts are usually rated around 400 to 450 lb. Bariatric lifts are built for heavier users, and the models in this collection are rated from 600 lb up to 1,000 lb.

Can a bariatric patient lift be used at home?

Yes. Many families use bariatric lifts at home. Measure doorways, hallways and the space around the bed first, because bariatric bases are wider than standard lifts, and check the base legs fit under the bed.

Do I need a bariatric sling?

Yes. The sling must be rated at or above the user's weight and be compatible with your lift's spreader bar. A standard sling on a bariatric lift is still limited to the sling's own rating.

Is a built-in scale worth it on a bariatric lift?

A scale lets you weigh the user during a normal transfer, which is much easier than getting a heavier person onto a standing scale. It comes standard on the Hoyer Calibre and is available on several MaxiCare and Hoyer models.

Is there a bariatric sit-to-stand lift?

Yes. The Bestcare SA600 and Lumex LF2090 are electric sit-to-stand lifts rated to 600 lb, for heavier users who can bear some weight on their legs.
