Which fat tire electric bike should I buy?

Start with wheel size, then the motor. The 20-inch fat tire bikes here (EUNORAU E-FAT-MN, GIO Lightning and the TESWAY X7 PRO, X5 AWD and X7 AWD) sit lower and are more compact. The 26-inch models (EUNORAU FAT-AWD, FAT-HD, FAT-HS and SPECTER-S, and the TESWAY X9 Ultra) suit taller riders and longer rides. Then compare motor power, listed range and top speed.

Hub motor, mid-drive or dual motor?

A hub motor sits in the wheel and pushes the bike directly; it is simple and quiet, as on the EUNORAU E-FAT-MN and GIO Lightning. A mid-drive motor sits at the pedals and drives through the gears, which helps on long climbs; the EUNORAU FAT-HD, FAT-HS and SPECTER-S use Bafang mid-drives. Dual-motor AWD bikes drive both wheels for extra traction on loose ground: the EUNORAU FAT-AWD 2.0 and 3.0 (front and rear 500W) and the TESWAY X5 AWD and X7 AWD.

Are fast fat tire e-bikes street legal?

It depends on where you ride. Many US states use a three-class system that caps motor assist at 20 mph for Class 1 and 2 e-bikes and 28 mph for Class 3. The TESWAY X7 PRO, X5 AWD, X7 AWD and X9 Ultra list top speeds of 32 to 43 mph, above those limits at full power. Check your state and local rules before riding on public roads, bike lanes or trails.

What should I check before ordering?

  1. Rider height against the range listed on the product page.
  2. Bike weight and how you will lift it: the EUNORAU FAT-AWD step-thru is listed at 79.4 lb, so plan for a car rack rated for the weight, or choose the folding GIO Lightning.
  3. Where you will charge and store the bike, and whether you want a second battery for longer rides.
  4. Step-thru or standard frame: the TESWAY X5 AWD is a step-thru for easier mounting.
