Hoyer Lifts for Home Use

A Hoyer lift lets one caregiver move a person from bed to wheelchair, commode or recliner without carrying their body weight. We stock genuine Hoyer® lifts by Joerns Healthcare alongside full-body sling lifts from Bestcare, Lumex and MaxiCare, from a $626 manual hydraulic lift to 1,000 lb bariatric models. For most homes, a battery-powered lift in the $1,250–$2,700 range is the sweet spot. Want the full price breakdown first? Read our Hoyer lift cost guide, or call +1 888.905.6858 with the person's weight and your bed height and we'll shortlist the right lift.

Find the right Hoyer lift in 3 questions

Most regrets in this category trace back to one of three numbers nobody measured. Answer these before you compare brands and you'll rule out most of the lifts above in under a minute.

1. How much does the person weigh?

Add at least 50 lb of headroom. The lift and the sling must both be rated above that number, because the lower of the two is your real limit. Over about 450 lb, go straight to bariatric.

2. How many transfers a day?

A few a week can work with a manual hydraulic pump. Several a day, or an older caregiver, points to electric: push-button lifting keeps both hands on the person.

3. How much space under the bed?

Measure from the floor to the bed frame and compare it with the base (leg) height on the product page. Measure doorways and the turn into the bathroom too.

Hoyer lift types and prices compared

"Hoyer lift" covers several quite different machines. Here's how our range breaks down, using current prices on this page.

TypePrice rangeCapacityBest forExamples
Manual hydraulic$626 – $865Up to 400 lbOccasional transfers, tight budgetsBestcare PL400H, Lumex LF1030
Electric (home)$1,250 – $2,595340 – 500 lbDaily home care, the best value for most familiesPL400HE, PL400EF (folds), Hoyer Advance, Lumex LF500 Pro
Professional$5,293 – $10,274500 lbFacilities, many transfers a day, powered base legsHoyer Presence, Hoyer Stature
Bariatric$2,625 – $9,995600 – 1,000 lbLarger users; check room width firstLumex LF1090, Hoyer HPL700, Hoyer Calibre, MaxiCare Ultra HD
With built-in scale$6,457 – $10,274500 – 1,000 lbOnly if regular weigh-ins are needed and you have no floor scalePresence with scale, Stature with scale
What most buyers miss: the cheapest lift is rarely the cheapest decision. An entry electric lift costs roughly $600 more than a manual one, and that gap buys what protects a caregiver's back most: lifting with a button instead of a pump handle, with both hands on the person the whole time.

Genuine Hoyer® or a Hoyer-style lift?

Hoyer® is a brand, made today by Joerns Healthcare, but the name has become what most people call any full-body sling lift. Both kinds are on this page and both are good choices. The difference is what you're paying for.

Choose genuine Hoyer® (Joerns) when…

  • Transfers happen many times a day, or several caregivers share the lift
  • You want facility-grade build: professional models like the Presence and Stature are tested to EN ISO 10535 and ship with two batteries
  • You need powered base legs, a built-in scale or 850 lb bariatric capacity
Shop Joerns Hoyer lifts

Choose Bestcare or Lumex when…

  • It's for one person at home with a few predictable transfers a day
  • Budget matters: comparable home electric lifts start at $1,250
  • You need to fold it for storage or travel (Bestcare PL400EF)
Shop Bestcare lifts

In practice, the brand on the mast matters less than two unglamorous details: whether the sling clips onto that lift's spreader bar (2-, 4- or 6-point), and whether the base slides under your bed. Get those right and almost any lift on this page will serve you well.

Budget for what isn't on the price tag

A sling, and ideally a spare

Many lifts ship without a sling. It must match the person's size and weight and attach to your lift's spreader bar. A second sling means the lift still works on laundry day.

A replacement battery

Batteries are consumables. Bestcare, for example, warranties frames for three years but batteries for one, so a spare avoids a dead lift mid-transfer.

Safety note: always follow the manufacturer's manual on how many caregivers a transfer needs, and check the sling for wear before every use. The FDA's patient lift guidance is a good five-minute read before first use.

Paying for a Hoyer lift: Medicare, HSA/FSA and financing

Medicare Part B can cover a prescribed patient lift for home use as durable medical equipment. You typically pay 20% of the approved amount after the deductible, and only through a Medicare-enrolled supplier that accepts assignment. To be upfront: Selected Comfort is not a Medicare-enrolled supplier, so we can't bill Medicare. Details are on Medicare.gov.

If you're paying privately, monthly financing is available on most orders, and many families use HSA or FSA funds (confirm eligibility with your plan administrator). Found a lower price elsewhere? Our price match guarantee has you covered.

Hoyer Lifts for Home Use: frequently asked questions

What is a Hoyer lift?

A Hoyer lift is a mobile, full-body patient lift that raises a person in a fabric sling hung from a spreader bar, so a caregiver can move them between bed, wheelchair, commode or chair without lifting them by hand. "Hoyer" is a brand made by Joerns Healthcare, but the name is widely used for any full-body sling lift. They're designed for people who can't bear weight on their legs; if the person can stand partially, a sit-to-stand lift is often a better fit.

How much does a Hoyer lift cost?

At Selected Comfort, manual hydraulic lifts run $626–$865, home electric lifts $1,250–$2,595, professional Hoyer models $5,293–$10,274, and bariatric lifts $2,625–$9,995 for 600 to 1,000 lb capacity. Slings are often sold separately, so budget for one or two. For most homes, a battery-powered lift between $1,250 and $2,700 gives the best balance of safety and cost.

Is an electric Hoyer lift worth it over a manual one?

For daily use, usually yes. A manual lift raises the person by pumping a hydraulic handle, which takes effort and one hand off the person. An electric lift raises and lowers at the press of a button, giving smoother, more controlled transfers, which matters most for older caregivers or several transfers a day. Entry electric models cost roughly $600 more than the cheapest manual lift. Manual lifts still make sense for occasional or backup use.

Does Medicare cover a Hoyer lift?

Medicare Part B may cover a patient lift as durable medical equipment when a doctor prescribes it for home use. You'd usually pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the Part B deductible, and the supplier must be Medicare-enrolled and accept assignment. Selected Comfort is not a Medicare-enrolled supplier, so we can't bill Medicare, but we offer monthly financing and many buyers use HSA or FSA funds after checking with their plan.

What weight capacity Hoyer lift do I need?

Pick a lift rated at least 50 lb above the person's current weight, and make sure the sling carries the same or higher rating, because the lowest-rated part sets the real limit. Standard lifts here handle 340–500 lb. For heavier users, bariatric options include the Lumex LF1090 (600 lb), Hoyer HPL700 (700 lb), Hoyer Calibre (850 lb) and MaxiCare Ultra HD (up to 1,000 lb). Measure room and doorway widths before choosing bariatric, as the bases are larger.

Do Hoyer lifts come with a sling?

Often not, so check the "what's included" section of each product page. The sling must suit the person's size and weight and attach to your lift's spreader bar type (2-, 4- or 6-point). Buying two slings is smart, so one is always ready while the other is being washed. If you're unsure which sling fits a particular lift, call us before ordering.

Will a Hoyer lift fit under my bed?

It depends on the base height. Measure the clearance from the floor to the lowest part of your bed frame and compare it with the base or leg height listed on each product page; the Bestcare PL400H base, for example, stands 4.8 inches tall. Platform beds with no gap usually need risers or a different bed. Send us your measurement and we'll tell you which lifts will fit.
