Folding Power Wheelchairs for Sale

A folding power wheelchair gives you joystick-driven independence that still fits in a car trunk, a closet or an airport gate check. Selected Comfort carries folding and lightweight power wheelchairs from Journey, FreeRider Luggie, AirFlyer and Robooter, priced from about $2,045 to $4,099.

Two numbers decide most purchases: the weight of the heaviest piece someone has to lift, and the rider's weight with room to spare. Want every chair, including full-size models? How to choose a folding power wheelchair

Choose the chair your household can lift or roll to the car, that carries the rider with 25 to 30% capacity to spare, and that covers your longest day at 60 to 75% of its listed range. These are the fit rules of Vineet Arora, Founder of Selected Comfort.

  • Heaviest piece, not headline weight. Vineet puts the realistic lift for one person at about 40 to 50 lb. The 70 lb FreeRider Luggie Folding Power Chair is built to be rolled, not carried.
  • Capacity headroom. A 200 lb rider should look for a rating of about 250 to 260 lb.
  • Real range. Expect less in cold weather or on slopes. The Journey Air's 6.2-mile listing means roughly 4 to 4.5 miles on a real day out.
  • Fold method. One pull (Journey Air Elite, Journey Air, Journey Zoomer, Journey Zinger), X-fold (AirFlyer), automatic (Robooter X40) or fold-and-roll (Luggie). The Zoomer has the smallest single lift in our range: its heaviest part weighs 19 lb.

Who a folding power wheelchair isn't for

Vineet recommends a full-size chair for riders who need higher capacity, maximum stability, real suspension or frequent rough outdoor use. The FreeRider Apollo II is rated for 470 lb but needs a ramp or vehicle lift to travel. If the rider can walk short distances, see our folding mobility scooter guide.

Flying with a folding power wheelchair

The FAA allows an installed lithium-ion battery of up to 300 Wh on a mobility device. Ask us for your chair's battery specification sheet, call the airline's accessibility desk 48 to 72 hours before departure, and practice removing the battery at home. Our air travel guide and air travel FAQs cover the airport step by step.

Read our warranty, returns and shipping policies, or call +1 888-905-6858 (Mon to Fri, 8am to 6pm ET) and tell us who is lifting the chair and where you are going.

Folding Power Wheelchairs for Sale: frequently asked questions

Which folding power wheelchair is the lightest to lift into a car?

In our range, the Journey Zoomer folding power wheelchair has the smallest single lift, with a heaviest part of 19 lb. The Journey Air Elite weighs 26 lb without its battery and the AirFlyer 28.5 lb. Take the battery out before lifting, and judge any chair by its heaviest piece, not the headline weight.

How much weight can a lightweight electric wheelchair carry?

Our lightweight electric wheelchairs with a published rating carry from 265 lb (Robooter X40) to about 330 lb (Robooter E60), with the AirFlyer and Journey Zoomer at 300 lb and the FreeRider Luggie Folding Power Chair at 320 lb. Choose a rating 25 to 30% above the rider's weight. For riders above that, the full-size FreeRider Apollo II is rated for 470 lb.

Will a foldable electric wheelchair fit in my car trunk?

Most will, but measure the trunk opening as well as the floor. The FreeRider Luggie Folding Power Chair folds to 23 x 23 inches, and the Journey Air Elite folds to 26.8 x 11.4 x 28.3 inches. Send us your trunk measurements and we will tell you which chairs fit.

What battery details do airlines ask for with a travel power chair?

Airlines ask for the battery type (lithium-ion), its watt-hour rating, and whether it is installed or removable. The FAA allows an installed lithium-ion battery of up to 300 Wh on a mobility device. Call the airline 48 to 72 hours before your flight, carry the battery specification sheet, and ask us for it before you book if you do not have it.

How much does a folding power wheelchair cost at Selected Comfort?

Our folding power wheelchairs cost from about $2,045 for the Journey Air to $4,099 for the FreeRider Luggie Travel Wheelchair with its larger 16.5 Ah battery. Standard shipping is free on eligible US orders, and financing and our Price Match Guarantee are available.

Does Medicare cover a folding power wheelchair?

Selected Comfort is not a Medicare-enrolled supplier, so we cannot bill Medicare for a folding power wheelchair. Some folding models, such as the Journey Air, are sold as personal electric vehicles rather than medical devices. Our Medicare power wheelchair coverage guide explains how Medicare decides on power wheelchairs, and Medicare.gov lists the official rules.
