Golden Designs MX-J306-02S: a 3-person "Dual Tech" infrared sauna

Most Golden Designs Maxxus saunas use one type of heater. The MX-J306-02S combines two. Its seven low EMF far infrared heaters mix ceramic and carbon technology, which is what the "Dual Tech" name refers to. It is built from reforested Canadian Hemlock and seats three people side by side on a 57" wide interior bench.

If you want carbon heating only and a lower price, look at the MXJ30601. If you want the lowest EMF reading in this size, the MXJ30601ZF Near Zero EMF measures under 3 mG. For two people, the same Dual Tech design comes as the MXJ20602S.

Planning your space and power

Floor space: allow a footprint of 61" x 44", plus a few inches behind for the power cord and air flow. Assemble on a flat, level, dry surface. Golden Designs recommends a moisture barrier if the floor can get damp, as in some basements.
Ceiling: the cabinet is 75" tall. Leave room above to lower the roof panel into place during assembly.
Circuit: this 3-person model needs a dedicated 120V 20-amp circuit. Do not share it with other appliances. The 2-person MXJ20602S runs on 15 amps, so check which one your electrician has planned for.
Delivery: it arrives in three cartons weighing 400 lb in total. Plan for two people to carry the panels in.

Assembly

The panels clasp together and the sauna was fully assembled and tested at the factory before packing. Golden Designs says two adults are needed, along with a Phillips screwdriver and a ladder. Inspect each heater for damage before you start, then follow the owner's manual: floor panel first, then the back, sides, bench, front and roof.

Using it

Preheat to your chosen temperature before you go in. Golden Designs puts the average setting at 118–122°F and the average session at 20–30 minutes. Below 72°F room temperature, preheating takes longer. Drink water before and after. The sauna is a residential appliance: after every three hours of running, switch it off for one hour.

Care is simple. Wipe the wood with a damp, soft cloth and keep the floor heater area free of debris. Avoid chemical cleaners, which the wood can absorb and release into the cabin when it heats up.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Dual Tech" mean?
The heaters combine ceramic and carbon far infrared technology. The carbon panels spread heat over a wide surface, while the ceramic elements add concentrated heat.

Is this low EMF or near zero EMF?
Low EMF: 5–10 mG at 2–3" from the panels. Golden Designs' Near Zero EMF models read under 3 mG.

Can I put it in a garage or outdoors?
It is rated for indoor use only. Outdoor placement and weather exposure are not covered by the warranty.

Who should check with a doctor first?
Golden Designs advises anyone who is pregnant, has a medical condition, takes medication or has surgical implants to consult a doctor before using an infrared sauna.

What is the difference between an infrared and a traditional sauna?

A traditional sauna heats the air to about 160–195°F with an electric or wood heater, and you can pour water on the rocks for steam. An infrared sauna uses infrared panels to warm your body directly at a lower air temperature of about 120–140°F, heats up faster and usually costs less to run.

Can a home sauna plug into a regular outlet?

Some 1–2 person infrared saunas plug into a dedicated 120 V household outlet (15–20 A). Larger infrared saunas and nearly all traditional heaters need a 240 V circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Each product page lists the exact electrical requirement.

How much does a home sauna cost?

What does low EMF or near zero EMF mean?

EMF (electromagnetic field) is emitted by electric heaters and wiring. Low, ultra-low and near zero EMF saunas use shielded heaters and wiring to reduce exposure inside the cabin. Golden Designs publishes the EMF rating on each model.

Is an outdoor sauna worth it?

An outdoor or barrel sauna frees up indoor space, can be larger, and pairs well with a cold plunge or pool. It needs a level, drained base and weather-rated wiring, so budget for site prep and an electrician.
