2-position vs 3-position vs infinite vs zero gravity

  • Infinite-position: back and footrest move independently, so you can lie almost flat. Best for napping or sleeping in the chair.
  • Zero gravity: raises the legs above the heart to take pressure off the spine. Popular for back pain, swelling and circulation.
  • Dual/multi-motor models (such as UltraComfort 5-Zone and AutoDrive chairs) give finer control and more positions.

Does Medicare pay for lift chairs?

Medicare Part B may cover part of the motorized seat-lift mechanism (not the chair itself) when a doctor prescribes it for severe arthritis of the hip or knee or a severe neuromuscular disease, and you can walk once standing. You pay the rest, including the furniture cost. Check with your doctor and plan before buying.

What size lift chair do I need?

Match the chair to your height and weight. On UltraComfort's chart, Small fits people 5'5" and under, Medium and Medium-Large fit 5'5" to 6'0", and Large fits 5'10" to 6'2". Medium-Wide models hold up to 600 lb. Your feet should rest flat on the floor when seated and your back should reach the top of the backrest.

What is the difference between a zero gravity and an infinite-position lift chair?

An infinite-position chair lets you stop the back and footrest anywhere, including almost flat. A zero gravity chair also lifts your legs above heart level, which spreads your body weight evenly and can ease pressure on the spine and swollen legs.

Can you sleep in a power lift recliner?

Yes. Infinite-position and zero gravity lift chairs recline far enough for comfortable sleep, and many people with back pain, reflux or breathing issues sleep better in one. Choose a model with battery backup so you can still stand up if the power goes out.
