Is a Home Hyperbaric Chamber Worth It? Break-Even Math vs Paying for Clinic Sessions
Is a Home Hyperbaric Chamber Worth It? Break-Even Math vs Paying for Clinic Sessions
Is a home hyperbaric chamber worth it? Usually yes, if you go three or more times a week for months. At $100–$250 a clinic session, a soft chamber from $5,750 pays for itself in 23 to 59 sessions. For a short course or supervised treatment, stay with the clinic.

Quick answer
- The formula: chamber price ÷ (clinic price − home cost per session).
- At four sessions a week, a soft chamber from $5,750 breaks even in about 1 to 3.5 months. A 2.0 ATA hard shell from $18,950 takes about 4.5 to 11 months.
- Budget $200–$500 a year for maintenance. Electricity is usually cents a session.
- Twenty clinic sessions cost less than any chamber we sell, so short courses belong at the clinic.
How do you work out the break-even point?
Divide the chamber price by what you save on each session at home. In our example, a home session costs about $2, so nearly the whole clinic price is saving.
At Selected Comfort, we sell soft and hard shell chambers for home use, and this is the math we walk customers through before they buy. You can compare every tier in our hyperbaric chambers collection.
- Find your home cost per session: yearly maintenance ÷ sessions a year, plus electricity.
- Subtract it from your clinic price. That's what each home session saves you.
- Divide the chamber price by that saving. The answer is your break-even in sessions.
Maintenance
I tell customers to set aside $200 to $500 a year, depending on the model and how hard it's used. At $350 and four sessions a week (208 a year), that's about $1.70 a session.
Electricity
Don't guess this one. Look up the wattage on your model's spec sheet, then multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000 to get kWh. Multiply that by your electricity rate.
Quick math
Say your compressor and concentrator pull 1,000 W between them and a session runs 75 minutes once you count pressurising. That's 1.25 kWh. The EIA puts the 2026 US average at about 18¢ per kWh, so you'd pay around 23¢. Add $1.70 of maintenance and a home session costs about $2.
Next to a $150 clinic visit, that barely registers. The chamber price decides it.
How many sessions does it take to pay off a home chamber?
Between 23 and 193 sessions, depending on the chamber tier and your clinic price. The table assumes four sessions a week and about $2 per home session.
| Chamber tier ("from" price) | Clinic at $100 | Clinic at $150 | Clinic at $250 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft 1.3–1.5 ATA, like the TecnoLay Classic (from $5,750) | 59 sessions, ~3.4 months | 39, ~2.2 months | 23, ~1.3 months |
| Roomier soft, like the MACY-PAN ST801 (from $9,000) | 92, ~5.3 months | 61, ~3.5 months | 36, ~2.1 months |
| Entry hard shell, like the TECNOTU Single-Person Modular (from $13,450) | 137, ~7.9 months | 91, ~5.2 months | 54, ~3.1 months |
| 2.0 ATA hard shell, like the Tecnolay Ultra S (from $18,950) | 193, ~11.1 months | 128, ~7.4 months | 76, ~4.4 months |

What the table tells you
Higher pressure costs you time. Moving from a soft shell to a 2.0 ATA hard shell roughly triples how long it takes to break even.
What you pay the clinic matters more than which chamber you pick. At $250 a session, a hard shell pays off sooner than a mid-range soft chamber does at $100.
Do you actually need 2.0 ATA?
For most home use, no. A 1.3 to 1.5 ATA soft chamber does the job. Read 1.5 ATA vs 2.0 ATA before paying for pressure you might not use.

Here's one worked through by hand. Say you pay $180 a session, go three times a week, and you're looking at a $9,000 soft chamber. Each home session saves you about $178. Divide $9,000 by $178 and you get 51 sessions. At three a week, that's about four months.
When does owning make sense?
Owning makes sense when you go often, will keep going for months, or share the chamber with someone else. A lot of our customers buy after several weeks of clinic sessions, once they've seen the receipts pile up.
You go often
Most of our home buyers plan on three to five sessions a week, and some use the chamber daily. At four a week and $150 each, you're spending about $2,600 a month at the clinic.

Our lowest-priced chamber, so it reaches break-even fastest for frequent users.
View productMore than one person will use it
Clinics charge per person. If someone else in the house uses the chamber regularly, you can get to break-even in roughly half the time. Each person should follow their own medical guidance.
The drive is wearing you down
No commute, no booking slot, no waiting room. It isn't in the table, but it's why people keep going.

When is the clinic the better choice?
The clinic wins for first-timers, short courses and anything that needs medical supervision. Sometimes the right answer is not to buy from us.
It's your first time
If you need someone watching while you learn how pressure changes feel and how to clear your ears, go to a clinic.
It's a short course
Twenty sessions at $150 comes to $3,000. That's less than any chamber we sell. Even at forty sessions, $6,000 only just tops a $5,750 soft chamber.
Your condition needs medical oversight
Watch out
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for cleared conditions happens in a facility, under a physician. The FDA lays this out. A home chamber is wellness equipment, and it doesn't replace treatment your doctor prescribes.
Can you rent instead of buying?
Not from us, at least for now. We don't do rentals or rent-to-own. If you aren't ready to commit, ask your healthcare provider about a supervised clinic course first. It costs far less than a chamber, and by the end you'll have a good idea how often you'd really use one.
What costs do people forget?
The concentrator, space and power, lifespan and loan interest all change the math once you're past the sticker price.
The concentrator
Unless you already own a compatible unit, choose the Chamber + Machine bundle. Our hyperbaric chamber cost guide shows what each tier comes with.
Space and power
Hard shells are heavy, and some need a dedicated circuit. Measure your doorways, stairs and the room before you order.

Lifespan and resale
TECNOTU lists 8,000 to 10,000 inflation cycles for its applicable soft chambers. Check that figure and the warranty for your exact model. Resale value depends on condition, service history, age and who's buying, so leave it out of your break-even.
Interest
If you're financing, add the interest to the chamber price before you calculate. Our hyperbaric chamber financing guide has sample monthly payments.

The bottom line
If you go three or more times a week, plan to keep it up for months, and don't need clinical supervision, a home chamber is probably worth it. It usually pays for itself within a few months, and a soft shell gets there fastest. If you're just starting, doing a short course, or need medical oversight, stay with the clinic.
