How to choose a patient lift for home

The right lift depends on one question first: can the person bear some weight on their legs? Then check weight capacity, power type and whether the base fits under your bed and through your doorways.

Hydraulic vs electric

Hydraulic lifts are pumped by hand and never need charging, but take more effort. Battery-powered electric lifts raise and lower at the push of a button, making them the safer choice for daily use by a single or older caregiver.

Home fit checklist

  • Measure the clearance under the bed (most bases need 4.5–6 in).
  • Check doorway widths against the base width when closed.
  • Choose a lift with an adjustable (spreading) base for wheelchairs and commodes.
  • Buy the correct sling type and size; the sling is what actually holds the person.

Patient Lifts for Home Use: frequently asked questions

Does Medicare cover patient lifts for home use?

Medicare Part B can cover a patient lift as durable medical equipment when a doctor prescribes one for use in your home. After the Part B deductible you usually pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, and the supplier must be enrolled in Medicare. Selected Comfort is not a Medicare-enrolled supplier, so we cannot bill Medicare; many families buy direct for faster delivery and a wider choice of models, and financing is available.

What is the difference between a Hoyer lift and a sit-to-stand lift?

A Hoyer (full-body) lift uses a sling to lift a person who cannot bear any weight. A sit-to-stand lift helps a person who can bear some weight and hold on to rise from sitting to standing. Sit-to-stand lifts are faster for toileting and help maintain leg strength; full-body lifts are required when the person cannot stand at all.

Can one person operate a patient lift?

Most home patient lifts are designed so one trained caregiver can transfer a person safely. Some facilities require two caregivers for full-body transfers. Electric lifts make single-caregiver use easier. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your care team’s guidance.

What weight capacity do I need?

Choose a lift rated at least 50 lb above the person’s current weight. Standard lifts handle 340 to 450 lb, heavy-duty lifts 500 to 600 lb, and bariatric lifts such as MaxiCare Ultra HD up to 1,000 lb.

Do patient lifts come with a sling?

It depends on the model; many lifts are sold without a sling because the sling type and size must match the person. Check the product description, and call us if you need help choosing a full-body, divided-leg or toileting sling.
