Hydrogen Inhalation Machine for Home: What to Know Before You Buy (2026)

Last updated: October 29, 20269 min readBy Vineet Arora, Founder, Selected Comfort

What should you check before buying a hydrogen inhalation machine for home? Choose a PEM/SPE unit, ask whether the flow figure is pure hydrogen, use distilled water and confirm its safety cut-offs. For one person at home, the 1,500 ml/min TECNOTU is usually enough.

Quick answer
  • PEM (or SPE, same thing) is what you want: a membrane keeps hydrogen and oxygen apart. Both TECNOTU units list 99.99% purity (the maker's own figure).
  • If a flow figure counts both gases at 2 parts hydrogen to 1 part oxygen, a third of the headline number is oxygen.
  • Hydrogen burns in air from 4% to 75%. Keep the machine away from flames, sparks and heaters.
  • Pregnant, on blood thinners, prone to nosebleeds or have lung trouble? Speak to your doctor first. The science is young, so treat it as a wellness device, not a cure.

What is a hydrogen inhalation machine?

It's a countertop box with a water tank that splits water and sends the hydrogen down a tube to a nasal cannula, the soft prongs you'd see with oxygen. You pour water in, press start, then sit back and read or watch TV.

Shops also call it a hydrogen gas inhaler or a molecular hydrogen inhalation device. Don't let the names throw you. It's one machine. "Molecular hydrogen" just means H2, the gas.

How a PEM hydrogen inhaler works

A PEM hydrogen inhaler has a thin plastic-like membrane inside, a proton exchange membrane if you want the full name. Hydrogen collects on one side. Oxygen collects on the other. They never meet, so each one leaves by its own exit and you only get the hydrogen.

Why PEM beats alkaline

Alkaline machines need a chemical, usually potassium hydroxide, mixed into the water. A few cost less. But cheap, badly built ones have let chlorine or ozone slip into the gas. Not in my living room, thanks. PEM is the safer bet.

At Selected Comfort, we only sell PEM/SPE units, both listed at 99.99% hydrogen purity, in our hydrogen inhalation machines collection. One caveat: that 99.99% is TECNOTU's own number. Whoever you buy from, ask to see the test paperwork behind the purity claim.

1,500 vs 3,000 ml/min: which one makes sense?

For one person at home, the 1,500 ml/min is usually enough. Flow rate is just the top amount of gas a machine can push out each minute, and when people compare a 1500 ml vs 3000 ml hydrogen machine, they nearly always assume the bigger one wins.

What I tell buyers

"More flow is not automatically better." If it's only you, in a spare room or by your reading chair, the 1,500 may well be all you need. I'd only point someone at the bigger units with a real reason, like a studio with clients coming through. Read what TECNOTU recommends, look at your bank balance, and decide.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. Is it PEM/SPE? If it needs potassium hydroxide in the water, it's alkaline.
  2. Is that number all hydrogen? Some brands count both gases. If it's two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen, a third of that headline figure is oxygen.
  3. Can two of us use it at once? Count the outlets, then check the maker actually allows it. A bigger box doesn't mean yes.
  4. What do parts cost, and who repairs it in the US? Get both answers in writing before you buy.

Water, noise and running costs

Use distilled or purified water, check the decibel figure in the manual, and budget for parts as well as the machine. Here's what that means in practice.

What water to use

Distilled or purified, as the manual says, the kind you buy by the gallon. Refill when the reservoir line drops. Please skip the kitchen tap. Its minerals and chlorine slowly crust up inside the cell, the part you least want to replace early.

Will the noise bother you?

Depends on the model. The manual's decibel figure tells you whether it can sit by your bed or belongs down the hall. Buyers ask me this a lot.

What it costs to own

Ours run from $1,990 to $3,499. Then there's water, a little electricity, and filters, membranes, tubing and cannulas as they wear. With any brand, get parts prices first and find out who repairs it in the US. Our terms are on the warranty page, and financing is available if you're approved.

Is a hydrogen inhalation machine safe at home?

For most people, yes. Just don't forget it's making a gas that burns.

Fire risk and placement

The US Department of Energy says hydrogen isn't toxic, has no colour or smell, and burns in air anywhere from 4% to 75%. It lights easily, too.

Watch out

Put it somewhere with a window you can crack open, and nowhere near the kitchen, a scented candle, a plug-in heater or a smoker. Flames, sparks and this machine shouldn't share a room.

Your nose

Easy to overlook. Spend hours on dry gas through nasal prongs and your nose can get dry, sore and start to bleed. Hospitals see it with oxygen. ENT doctors have warned about the same thing with long hydrogen sessions at home.

Who should check with a doctor first

Is a hydrogen inhalation machine safe at home for you in particular? I can't answer that, and neither can a product page. Your doctor can. I'd especially want you to ask first if you're pregnant, you take blood thinners, your nose bleeds easily, or you've got anything going on with your lungs.

Habits that keep it safe and running

Most problems come down to water, wiring and worn parts. Stick to these and you avoid nearly all of them.

  • Before you buy, ask if it shuts off on low water, overheating or a timer. Not every machine does all three.
  • Plug it in the way the manual says. If it says no extension leads, believe it.
  • Distilled or purified water, every time.
  • One cannula per person. Sharing tubing is like sharing a toothbrush.
  • Swap tubing, cannulas, filters and membrane on TECNOTU's schedule, not when they look grubby.
  • Nosebleeds that keep coming back, crusty nostrils, a new cough or a tight chest? Switch it off and book a doctor's appointment.

So does breathing hydrogen actually do anything?

Short answer: we don't really know yet. Most of the buzz traces back to a 2007 study. Rats that breathed 1% to 4% hydrogen had less brain damage after a stroke-like event. Fascinating. Still rats.

In people it's patchier. A 2023 review in Molecules found 81 human trials and some encouraging signs, but wouldn't say hydrogen will ever be a real treatment. A Japanese cardiac arrest trial missed statistical significance on its main goal, and COVID-19 stopped it early.

None of it involved a home machine on a coffee table. So we don't make health claims, and please don't change anything your doctor prescribed because you bought one.

Fitting it into a home wellness setup

Hydrogen, a chamber and a sauna don't replace each other. They do different jobs, so pick by what you want from each.

The bottom line

Buy PEM/SPE, ask what the flow number really counts, feed it distilled water, and keep it away from flames. For one person at home, the 1,500 ml/min machine covers most needs; move up only with a real reason, like a studio or shared use the maker approves.

Check with your doctor first if any of the health flags above apply, and treat it as a wellness device, not a cure. Ready to choose? Start with the TECNOTU 1500 ml/min or compare both in our hydrogen inhalation machines collection.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before buying a hydrogen inhalation machine for home?

Check that it uses PEM/SPE technology, whether its flow figure is pure hydrogen or both gases combined, what water it needs, and which safety cut-offs it has, such as low water, overheating and a timer. Also get parts prices and find out who repairs it in the US.

What water should I use in a hydrogen inhalation machine?

Use distilled or purified water, as the manual says. Tap water leaves a mineral crust in the cell, which shortens its life.

How much does a hydrogen inhalation machine cost?

Our TECNOTU machines cost $1,990 to $3,499, plus water, electricity and the occasional set of filters, membranes, tubing and cannulas. Financing is available for approved buyers.

Is 1,500 or 3,000 ml/min better for home use?

For one person at home, 1,500 ml/min is usually enough. More flow is not automatically better, so choose the 3,000 ml/min or 6,000 ml/min version only if you have a real need, such as a studio with clients.

Is breathing hydrogen the same as drinking hydrogen water?

No. The machine's gas goes in through your lungs, while hydrogen water goes through your gut. If you want both, ask whether your model can also make drinkable hydrogen water.

Can two people use one machine?

Maybe. The machine needs enough outlets, and the maker has to approve sharing. Each person should always use their own cannula. Ask us about the exact model before you buy.

Does a hydrogen inhalation machine need maintenance?

Some, yes. Keep the water topped up with distilled or purified water, and change filters, membranes, tubing and cannulas when TECNOTU says to.
