What the two models have in common

Build quality is the same, so it won't decide this for you. Both byACRE rollators use a carbon fiber frame with aluminum parts.

  • Forward-facing handles, integrated brakes and push-button height adjustment
  • A seat for resting, and a fold that works by lifting the seat
  • Delivered fully assembled, each with a small bag
  • Lifetime warranty on the carbon frame, per our product pages (full terms on our warranty page)

At Selected Comfort, we help customers match mobility equipment to how they actually live, and with these two that comes down to three things: your terrain, how often you lift it and your height. Every model we carry is in our rollators collection.

Weight and lifting: the Ultralight wins

The byACRE Carbon Ultralight is the easier rollator to live with if you lift it often. At 10.6 lb it's among the lightest rollators on the market.

The Overland, at 14.8 lb, isn't heavy either. But lift it in and out of the car three or four times on a busy day and the extra four pounds add up. The Ultralight also folds slimmer: 9.8" against the Overland's 11". In a small hatchback that inch can matter.

Quick math

Four car loads a day, in and out, is eight lifts. With the Overland that's about 34 lb more lifted every day than with the Ultralight.

"The Ultralight is the one for everyday life: walking, shopping, travel," Vineet says. "If you're mostly on pavement and you lift it a lot, go for the lighter frame."

Wheels and terrain: the Overland wins outdoors

If you walk on gravel, grass or trails, the byACRE Carbon Overland is the better rollator. Push the Ultralight down a gravel path and you'll feel its small solid wheels catch on the stones.

The Overland's 9.8" pneumatic tires are 2" wide and run on sealed bearings, so they roll over cracks, tree roots and loose gravel far more easily. The air also soaks up bumps you'd otherwise feel in your wrists.

The catch is upkeep. "Air tires give you grip and cushioning, but they can puncture or slowly lose pressure," Vineet says. "Check the pressure regularly against the manufacturer's recommendation and look the tires over for damage. Don't just guess the PSI." The Ultralight's puncture-proof wheels need next to no care.

What about the beach?

Watch out

Neither byACRE model is made for soft sand. For beach walks, choose a dedicated beach rollator like the Wheeleez All-Terrain Beach Rollator ($1,290) or the DB Foldable Lightweight All-Terrain Beach Walker ($1,295). Financing is available.

Handle height: check this before you decide

For shorter buyers, handle height can settle the question on its own. The Overland's handles adjust from 33.5" to 37.4"; the Ultralight's start lower, at 30.7".

"For some people under 5'3", the Overland's lowest setting is simply too high," Vineet says. "Check the handle height against the user's wrist height and posture. Quite often the Ultralight Compact turns out to be the better fit."

How to check your handle height

  1. Stand up straight in the shoes you normally walk in.
  2. Let your arms hang loosely by your sides.
  3. Have someone measure from the floor to the crease on the inside of your wrist. That's roughly your handle height (the same check Mayo Clinic recommends).
  4. If you measure under 33.5", the Overland won't go low enough for you, however well it suits your walks.

Picking an Ultralight size

The Overland comes in one size; the Ultralight comes in three. Measure across your hips while seated and compare it with the seat widths below.

Compact16.1" seat

For shorter users. Lowest seat (22.4") and narrowest frame (23.6").

Regular16.7" seat

Where Vineet usually starts with average-height adults. 24" seat height.

Wide18.5" seat

More room on the seat and between the handles. 26.6" overall width.

"And always check byACRE's height and width guidance before you order," Vineet adds.

Is a carbon fiber rollator worth the money?

It's worth it if you're out most days or you travel; it's harder to justify if the rollator will mostly stay at home. What you're really paying for is the low weight, since a basic aluminum rollator costs a fraction of either model.

"For people who travel a lot or stay active, it's worth it," Vineet says. "For occasional use or a tight budget, an aluminum rollator is a sensible choice."

Who should buy which?

Buy the Ultralight for pavement and frequent lifting; buy the Overland for rough ground and higher capacity.

Buy the Carbon Ultralight if you:

  • Walk mostly on sidewalks, indoors, in stores or at airports
  • Lift it into a car often, or your arms and shoulders tire easily
  • Are under about 5'3" (start with the Compact)
  • Would rather never have to pump up a tire

Buy the Carbon Overland if you:

  • Regularly walk on gravel, grass, dirt paths or trails
  • Need more than 286 lb of capacity (it's rated to 330 lb)
  • Want a smoother ride over broken or uneven sidewalks
  • Don't mind checking the tire pressure every so often

Our 3-wheel vs 4-wheel rollator guide covers frame stability.

Common buying mistakes

The most common mistake is choosing on weight alone. These are the four Vineet sees most often:

  1. Choosing on weight alone. A super-light rollator isn't much use if its wheels struggle on your usual route.
  2. Forgetting about handle height. Shorter buyers who pick the Overland are the ones this catches out.
  3. Not measuring the trunk. Check your space against the folded widths of 9.8" and 11".
  4. Paying for outdoor tires you won't use. If you hardly ever leave the pavement, air tires just add weight and maintenance.

The bottom line

For most people who walk on pavement, shop and travel, the Ultralight is the better buy: lighter, slimmer when folded, maintenance-free and $100 cheaper. If you're under about 5'3", the Compact size is usually the right fit.

If your walks take you onto gravel, grass or trails, or you need the 330 lb capacity, the extra weight of the Overland pays off in a smoother, steadier ride. Compare both in our rollators collection.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the byACRE Ultralight and Overland?

The Ultralight is lighter (10.6 lb against 14.8 lb) and has puncture-proof wheels for smooth surfaces. The Overland has 9.8" pneumatic tires for rough terrain and supports up to 330 lb, compared with 286 lb for the Ultralight.

What is the lightest rollator walker for seniors?

At 10.6 lb, the byACRE Carbon Ultralight is one of the lightest rollators you can buy, thanks to its carbon fiber frame.

Can I take the byACRE Ultralight on a plane?

Yes, in most cases. US rules let passengers with a disability bring a walker into the cabin if it fits a storage space, and it doesn't count toward your carry-on limit. Stowage space varies by aircraft, so check with your airline before you fly.

Which byACRE rollator is better for a shorter person?

Usually the Ultralight Compact. Its handles go down to 30.7", while the Overland's stop at 33.5", which can be too high for people under about 5'3".

Is the byACRE Overland worth the extra $100?

It is if you regularly walk on gravel, grass or trails, or need a capacity above 286 lb. If you mostly stay on pavement, the Ultralight is lighter, needs no tire care and costs less.

Do byACRE rollators come assembled?

Yes. Both the Carbon Ultralight and the Carbon Overland arrive fully assembled, and both fold by lifting the seat.
