Portable Hyperbaric Chamber: What to Know Before Buying
What should you know before buying a portable hyperbaric chamber? For most homes, a 1.3 to 1.5 ATA soft chamber is enough. The deciding factor is how easily you can get in and out, so pick lying, sitting or wheelchair access first, then check weight, space and oxygen flow.

Quick answer
- The chamber alone weighs about 40 to 50 lb, but with compressor, concentrator and cooler the full system is closer to 150 lb.
- Most soft chambers run at 1.3 to 1.5 ATA, which is enough for most home buyers.
- Look for an oxygen concentrator of 10 to 15 L/min and check the chamber's real working pressure, not just the maximum.
- Soft chambers at Selected Comfort cost roughly $5,750 to $11,500; single-person hard shells start near $13,400.
What is a portable hyperbaric chamber?
A portable hyperbaric chamber is a soft, inflatable chamber you set up at home. A compressor fills it to mild pressure, usually 1.3 to 1.5 ATA, while you breathe concentrated oxygen through a mask. It folds down after use.
Hard shells are different. They use steel and polycarbonate walls and can reach 2.0 ATA, but they weigh hundreds of pounds and don't move once they're in.
The exception in our range is the TECNOTU Tecnolay Pro, a soft chamber you can turn up to 2.0 ATA. New to ATA? Our hyperbaric chamber FAQ on ATA and shell types walks through it, and the 1.5 ATA vs 2.0 ATA comparison covers whether the higher pressure is worth paying for.
At Selected Comfort, we help home buyers match a chamber to their body, their room and their budget, and most end up in a soft model from our hyperbaric chamber collection.
Vineet is relaxed about pressure. He sees a $13,000-plus hard shell as right for people with a specific reason to want more pressure, who want clinical-style equipment, or who have a spare room and the budget. That's a small group. For everyone else, a 1.5 ATA soft chamber is fine.

A soft, foldable chamber you can turn up to 2.0 ATA, without the weight of a hard shell.
View productLying, sitting or wheelchair access: which style fits?
Pick the style by how easily you get in and out. A 0.1 ATA difference rarely decides how much you'll use a chamber. Having to crawl into it every morning often does.
| Style | Example chambers | Pressure | Good for | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lying | OxyRevo Apex32, TECNOTU TecnoLay Classic | 1.3–1.5 ATA | Resting or dozing through a session | You get in at floor level |
| Sitting | TECNOTU TecnoSit Classic, OxyRevo Forward90 | 1.2–1.5 ATA | Reading, working, smaller rooms | You can't stretch out |
| Sit or lie | TECNOTU Recline, Kingshare 1.5 ATA Sitting/Lying | 1.3–1.5 ATA | Changing position mid-session | Entry is still low |
| Wheelchair access | TECNOTU 1.3 ATA Wheelchair, MACY-PAN MC4000, OxyRevo Heal40 | 1.2–1.4 ATA | Limited mobility | Very tall once inflated |

Quick test
Can everyone who'll use it get down to the floor and back up without a second thought? If so, a lying chamber gives the most space for the price. If anyone pauses, look at the sitting and wheelchair rows.
TECNOTU ReclineFrom $5,750
Sit up or lie back in the same session, for people who can't decide between styles.
View productHow portable is a portable hyperbaric chamber, really?
Less than the name suggests. You can move it between rooms, but it isn't luggage. The chamber itself is light: TECNOTU lists the TecnoSit Classic and TecnoLay Classic at around 40 lb, and the Recline at around 50.
It's everything else in the box. MACY-PAN's spec sheet for the MC4000 puts the chamber at 21 kg (about 46 lb), the compressor at 18 kg (about 40 lb), the oxygen concentrator at 24 kg (about 53 lb) and the air cooler at 4.5 kg (about 10 lb).
Quick math
46 + 40 + 53 + 10 lb = roughly 150 lb in four pieces. Fine for shifting to another room or tucking away when family visits. Packing it for a weekend trip is another matter.

View productSpace and setup: measure before you order
Measure the whole delivery route and the spot the chamber will live, before you order. Vineet's checklist isn't exciting, which is probably why people skip it:
- Measure the doorway and every hallway turn on the way in.
- Check the stairs or elevator.
- Measure the ceiling height and the exact spot the chamber will go, plus room beside it to unzip and climb in.
- Check the floor can take the weight.
- Leave a separate patch of floor for the compressor and concentrator.
- Add up the wattage on the spec sheet and pick a suitable outlet.
Lying chambers need length. The OxyRevo Apex32 is 89 inches long. Wheelchair chambers need height. The Heal40 stands 75 inches tall when inflated, and the MC4000 is about 69.
Power and heat get forgotten. Both machines run for the whole session, and the MC4000's concentrator alone is rated at 480 W. Pressurized air also warms the cabin, and an hour in a stuffy room feels much longer, so pick a spot with good airflow and look kindly on systems with an air cooler.
Safety features to check on a soft hyperbaric chamber
Check how a chamber keeps you safe before you compare prices. These are the features to look for:
- More than one zipper. TECNOTU uses YKK zippers, and MACY-PAN uses a three-layer design that lets the seal relax if the machines lose power, so you can unzip and climb out.
- Pressure gauges inside and outside, so you and whoever's in the room read the same number.
- Relief valves, both automatic and manual, plus an emergency deflation valve.
- Controls inside and out, so one person can run a session alone.
Watch out
Oxygen under pressure is a fire risk. The FDA's letter on hyperbaric device safety keeps it simple: follow the manufacturer's instructions. Leave your phone and anything else with a battery outside, and talk to your doctor before your first session. A home chamber is wellness equipment, and it's no substitute for treatment your doctor has prescribed.
Oxygen flow and working pressure: the specs buyers skip
Check two numbers: the concentrator's oxygen flow and the chamber's everyday working pressure. Both get skimmed past.
On oxygen flow, the TecnoSit Classic, TecnoLay Classic and Recline ship with 10 L/min concentrators, and the TECNOTU Wheelchair chamber and Tecnolay Pro come with 15 L/min. A weak concentrator is one of the regrets Vineet hears about most.
Working pressure is what the chamber runs at day to day, which isn't always the biggest number on the listing. The OxyRevo Forward90 runs at 1.4 ATA as standard. If you want 1.5, you ask for it.

View productChoosing a portable hyperbaric chamber for seniors
For seniors, choose a chamber you sit in or roll into, not one you lie down in, especially if knees or hips are stiff. When getting in feels like hard work, sessions get skipped.
The TECNOTU 1.3 ATA Wheelchair chamber has touchscreens inside and out. The MACY-PAN MC4000 has an N-shaped zipper door for wheelchairs and room for two seats. The OxyRevo Heal40 sits on an aluminum base with a slope built in. Run it past a doctor first, particularly with ear, sinus or lung problems.

Mistakes we see most often
The regrets Vineet hears rarely involve pressure. They look like this:
Avoid
- Buying a chamber that's too small and dreading the hour inside.
- Assuming crawling in at floor level will always feel easy.
- Forgetting the compressor hums and the cabin gets warm.
- Choosing on price without looking at the concentrator.
- Never finding out what pressure the chamber actually runs at.
The bottom line
Decide how you'll get in first, then measure the route and the room, then compare oxygen flow and working pressure. For most homes that leads to a 1.3 to 1.5 ATA soft chamber: lying if getting to the floor is easy, sitting or wheelchair access if it isn't.
